Hiring

For GSR Hiring and/or Student Assistant Hiring, complete the GSR Hiring Form or the Student Assistant Hiring Form.  You can check with Jane Youn (jyoun@berkeley.edu) if you have any questions about:  (1) fund balance, (2) chartstring usage, or (3) estimated cost.

Additional information about hirings can be found respectively on these webpages SHARE Region GSR Hiring and SHARE Region Student Assistant Hiring.  A member of the economics staff will coordinate with ECON's HR Generalist, Iman Pour, to initiate the hiring process.

For Academic Hiring (Postdocs, Specialists, Researchers), contact ECON's HR Business Partner, Herman Sangera, who will coordinate with a member of the ECON Academic Personnel team on steps needed to recruit for Academic Positions.

Additional information about hiring Academic Positions can be found on the SHARE Region Academic Hiring webpage.

Please note that the hiring department is determined by the funding source.  If you are using a non-Economics Department chartstring, then contact the department that manages your chartstring to process the hire.

Academic Hiring and Scholarly Appointments in Economics

This guide outlines the initial steps and contacts for UC Berkeley faculty looking to hire or sponsor Lecturers, Postdoctoral Scholars, Pre-doctoral Researchers, Visiting Professors, Visiting Scholars, and Visiting Student Researchers.

Lecturers (Non-Senate Faculty)

Lecturers are hired to teach undergraduate courses of programmatic need, typically large service courses.

  • General Questions & Search Pool: Contact Marianne Callahan (mcallahan@berkeley.edu), AP Analyst.
  • Annual Teaching Needs & Hiring Lecturers: Direct inquiries regarding programmatic needs to the Vice Chair(s) for Curriculum (copying Isabel Compo, Director of Student Services).
  • Funding: Lecturers are hired to teach undergraduate courses of programmatic need, typically large service courses. Appointments are funded by Temporary Academic Support (TAS) provided annually from the Dean.  Lecturers are not hired to teach graduate courses, except under exceptional circumstances. Such positions are not funded from TAS.
  • Compensation: All appointments adhere strictly to the Unit 18 union contract rules for salary and percentage of time.
  • Search Pool: The Department launches an annual open pool for PhDs to apply for teaching opportunities.
    • Latest Pool: See APRecruit [LINK]
  • Reappointment: Pre-Six Unit 18 Lecturers with a current appointment who submit a Statement of Interest are considered for reappointment prior to external applicants (ref. Article 7A-NSF Appointments, J.1).

Postdoctoral Scholars

  • Appointing Postdoctoral Scholars: Contact, Herman Sangera (hsangera1@berkeley.edu), HR Partner for Economics.
  • Appointing and Supporting a Postdoc – OverviewVisiting Scholar and Postdoctoral Affairs
  • Teaching Exception: Postdoctoral Scholars may teach as Lecturers if they are successfully hired through the search pool and the teaching aligns with their research and training.
    • FTE Policy: The total FTE of concurrent Lecturer and Postdoctoral appointments cannot exceed 1.0 (100% time).
    • Requirements for Dual Appointments: If hired as a Lecturer, the Postdoc must voluntarily reduce their Postdoc FTE in writing to accommodate the Lecturer role. The PI must be aware and supportive of this reduction.
    • Prior to accepting, the postdoc understands what their overall gross salary will be during the period of holding two positions
  • External Postdocs: A scholar holding an active Postdoc appointment at another institution cannot be appointed as a Postdoc at UC Berkeley and must be reviewed as a Visiting Scholar via exceptional approval.
  • Policy Reference: Consult the UC Postdoctoral Scholars contract for exceptions to full-time appointments: UC Postdoc Labor Agreement PDF.

Pre-doctoral Researchers (Junior Specialist)

  • Hiring Pre-doctoral scholars: Contact, Herman Sangera (hsangera1@berkeley.edu), HR Partner for Economics.
  • Position Type: Pre-doctoral researchers are typically hired via an open search for an academic Junior Specialist position (APM 330), which accommodates both domestic and international candidates.
  • Funding: Your funding source (chart-string) determines which Berkeley Regional Services (BRS) unit / HR partner oversees the hiring process. If you are unclear about your funding source, please contact Jane Youn (jyoun@berkeley.edu), Assistant Director of Finance.
  • Timeline: Plan ahead. Recruitment takes at least 2 months to set up. If visa sponsorship (e.g., J-1 scholar) is required, this process can add several additional months (check the Berkeley International Office's timeline for J-1 scholars here).
  • Preliminary Planning: Consult the Process Map - Pre-doctoral Hiring [Coming Soon!] for guidance.

Visiting Scholars (VS) and Visiting Student Researchers (VSR)

  • VS & VSR Requests: Contact Eric Castro (econmainoffice@berkeley.edu), Office and Business Services.
  • Process:
    1. Faculty sponsor completes the Department's visiting scholar request form provided by Eric Castro.
    2. The request is reviewed and approved by the Department Chair.
    3. Eric Castro facilitates the fhttps://vspa.berkeley.edu/why-berkeleyormal campus appointment with the Visiting Scholar and Postdoc Affairs office (VSPA).
  • Policy: Review the Visiting Student Research and Visiting Scholar Protocol [LINK].
  • Visiting from another U.C.: Professors on leave/sabbatical from other U.C. schools are not allowed to be appointed as Visiting Scholars. We can appoint them as Contingent Workers (CWR017) and submit a Multi Location Agreement. This maintains their pay from the Home institution but allows affiliation at the Host institution, e.g. the Visiting Scholar can obtain a Calnet Photo ID.
  • VSR Note: VSRs are not allowed UCB course credit (including Extension or Summer Sessions). A change in status is required to become a UCB registered student.

Visiting Professors

Faculty can invite professors from other universities who wish to visit and engage in all of teaching, research, advising, and interaction with the scholarly community.

  • Inquiries: Contact the Vice Chair(s) for Curriculum to discuss inviting/sponsoring potential visiting professors who wish to both teach and conduct research.
  • General Questions & Hiring Process:  Contact Marianne Callahan (mcallahan@berkeley.edu), AP Analyst.
  • Funding: Faculty sponsors must fund these positions. If the visiting professor can teach a course of departmental need, then that portion of the appointment can be funded from the Temporary Allocation Support (TAS) provided annually by the Dean. The range of salary for a course is approximately $15,000 - 25,000 commensurate with rank and experience.
  • Inter-Campus Appointments: Faculty from another U.C. campus must be paid at their current appointment rate via a Multi Location Form (MLF). This is often financially prohibitive; please inquire first. A UC faculty member on sabbatical can visit as a Visiting Scholar, however, the process is different for professors from another UC school. See the Visiting Scholar section for more information.

Summer Session Instructors

  • Recommendations: Send recommendations for candidates/scholars that could potentially teach in the Summer Sessions program to the Vice Chair(s) for Curriculum.
  • Hiring Process: Direct questions to Marianne Callahan (mcallahan@berkeley.edu), AP Analyst.

Office Space for Visitors

  • Contact: Direct all office space requests for any type of visitor appointment to Eric Castro (econmainoffice@berkeley.edu), Office and Business Services.
