Admissions Checklists

For the 2023-24 cycle (Fall 2024 matriculation. Information for 2024-25 will be updated by August 15, 2024. 

If you applied to the UC Berkeley Department of Economics within the last two years, please use the checklist for first-time applicants.  Be certain to include all institutions where you have completed academic work since your last application (if applicable).

First-Time Applicants

The following checklist contains the requirements from first-time applicants to the Department of Economics:

  1. Graduate Admissions Application (complete ALL parts online)
  2. All supporting documents, i.e., copies of unofficial transcripts, 3 letters of recommendation, statement of purpose (no more than 3-pages double-spaced), personal history statement (no more than 3-pages double-spaced), GRE Scores, and TOEFL Scores (if applicable) MUST be submitted via the online Graduate Application.
  3. Nonrefundable application fee paid online

Previous and Current UC Berkeley Graduate Students

The following checklist contains the requirements from applicants who are previous UC Berkeley Graduate Students seeking to gain readmission into the university, and change of major or current UC Berkeley Graduate Students who are seeking a change of major.

  1. Graduate Admissions Application (complete ALL parts online)
  2. All supporting documents, i.e., copies of offices transcripts, 3 letters of recommendation, GRE Scores, and TOEFL Scores (if applicable) MUST be submitted via the online Graduate Application.
  3. Nonrefundable readmissions application fee is required for previous UC Berkeley students seeking readmission into the university.

New Admits

Congratulations on receiving an offer of admission to the Ph.D. program in Economics at the University of California, Berkeley! Admission to the Ph.D. program is highly competitive; you should be very proud of this achievement. Please see below for important information regarding your offer of admission. 

Plan your Visit 

Don't miss the prospective student Visit Day scheduled for Tuesday, April 2, 2024 This is your opportunity to explore the campus, meet with faculty and current Ph.D. students, and attend classes. Planned activities for the day include a campus tour, class visits, faculty meetings, a social, and more. We will be in touch via email with further information regarding Visit Day. You can also review the Visitor Services website for helpful information on traveling to and staying overnight in Berkeley. We hope to see you in Berkeley soon!

Accept the Offer 

You should soon receive an official letter from the Dean of the Graduate Division confirming your offer of admission. Graduate Division's formal letter will include details on how to formally accept or decline your offer of admission. You can also find more information here. Please make your decision to accept or decline by the national deadline, April 15, 2024.
