The Economics department email will be moving from CalMail to bMail. This migration will affect both @berkeley.edu and @econ.berkeley.edu email, which currently reside on the CalMail servers. (Graduate students’ @berkeley.edu mail is handled differently; see http://bconnected-project.berkeley.edu/test-page.

The scheduled move date is Friday, May 31, at 5:00 pm

It will take most of the weekend to move all the department’s mail from CalMail to bMail, but please understand that you will always have access to email. You will be able to send and receive messages using bMail throughout the weekend while the migration is underway. The migration will be completed by Monday, June 3.

Preparing for bMail/the migration

Please see the Subdomain batch pre-migration checklist for a list of steps you can take to facilitate the migration. We will be sending out more specific instructions as the migration date approaches.

What the migration will mean

How the migration will affect you depends on how you are currently using email:

  • If you are not currently using an @berkeley.edu or @econ.berkeley.edu account but are having mail sent to those addresses forwarded, you will need to redo the forwarding you have set up on the bMail website.
  • People who currently have both @econ.berkeley.edu and @berkeley.edu accounts will have a single account after the migration. You will be able to send and receive from either address after the migration.
  • A number of people have been using an @econ.berkeley.edu address exclusively and have not previously had an @berkeley.edu account. New @berkeley.edu email accounts have been created for these users. All email will go into the same account.
  • People who have been using an @berkeley.edu email address should note that your CalMail folder structure and messages older than October 1, 2012, have already been copied to your bMail account. Deleting and rearranging older messages in CalMail now will NOT be reflected in your bMail account. The ‘final’ migration will copy only newer messages and any newly created folders to bMail.

As we approach the final migration date you’ll receive reminder emails with additional information.

Training will be available:

  1. Demonstration and Q&A -- Please plan to attend a presentation given by Mindy McDaniels, our bConnected Migration Coordinator, at 3:00 p.m. on May 8 in 648 Evans Hall. Details on the migration process, as well as answers to your questions, will be provided.
  2. bMail training -- schedule of hands-on classes, instructional videos and how-to’s are all available on the bConnected-project.berkeley.edu website at http://bconnected-project.berkeley.edu/training/.
  3. Documentation -- We have put up some documentation on the Econ website at https://www.econ.berkeley.edu/content/bmail-migration.

Finally, we will be encouraging users to try out of the bMail web interface, which is a Berkeley-branded version of Gmail. However, your IT support staff will be available to reconfigure each person’s desktop settings for Thunderbird or Outlook to sync with bMail just before or after the migration weekend.
